WF's Little Duos, today Caperdonich |
Remember, Glen Grant #2, closed by new owners Pernod in 2002 and dismounted in 2011. There are official Caperdonich releases today, but they're not really promoted and I get the impression that everyone is a bit indifferent to them, which is quite a pity. That said, it is independents that we are going to taste today, remembering the very magical 1972s.

Caperdonich 25 yo 19952021 (52%, WhiskySponge, refill sherry hogshead, 124 bottles)
Apparently, according to the label, there's a sort of collusion with NASA here, so let's be wary (no, it's not the No Age Statement Association, S.) Colour: gold. Nose: I've never found these Caperdonichs from the 1980s or 1990s very readable, so to speak. Sometimes there's a greasy and mineral peat, while at other times it's the garden fruits that take over. I feel we are somewhat balancing between two worlds here, with lots of fruit peelings in addition to the green walnuts from the sherry. The jury's still out. With water: chalk is added. Mouth (neat): once again I find this palate quite difficult to pin down without water. Lots of grass, peach skin, green peppercorns... I find it quite a little rough. With water: much better, thanks to all the citrus that comes into the mix, especially rather pretty oranges. Very pretty oranges, in fact. Finish: oh darn, was it me who was too quick or the whisky that was too slow? Here we go, oranges, mandarins, little berries, even a bit of passion fruit, that's an extremely pretty finish. Comments: these things happen. Shall we rate the whole or take more account of such a promising finish? A promising finish, does that even make the slightest sense?

Caperdonich 30 yo 1992/2022 (51.4%, Sansibar for Whisky-Maniac, bourbon hogshead, cask #121114, 221 bottles)
Some German bottlers have tremendous labels these days. Excuse me? Oh and great whiskies, you're right. Colour: white wine. Nose: we're more on the purity of orchard fruits, from white currants to gooseberries through apples and greengages. Not much to add at this precise moment. With water: water, ink, grass, damp earth, polish, and a bit of turpentine. Mouth (neat): similar, with white and yellow fruits, coated in paraffin and with some curious, somewhat unexpected touches of glue. With water: once again, citrus comes to the rescue, but the paraffin is still very much present. Indeed, these Caperdonichs are giving me a hard time and I believe this is not the first time. Finish: bam, the citrus fruits and their zests. Without water, it's even quite beautiful, very tight, with a nice pepperiness. Comments: honestly, I don't know. I feel that it's an excellent whisky, like the Sponge, but I can't quite get to grips with it, if you will. Please disregard my scores.

A rather tough session today, I would have been better off planting cabbages or watching yet another silly series about drug cartels on Netflix. |
