WF's Little Duos,
today Glenkinchie |
Glenkinchie seems to be getting rather thin on the ground these days, but as part of our special T.A.D.W.Y.C. (Try All Distilleries Whenever You Can) programme, we’ve been fortunate enough to have two of them land on our tasting table today. |

Glenkinchie 12 yo (43%, OB, +/-2026) 
Good Lord, the last time I tasted this little 12 was back in 2020, and what’s more, that was a +/-2018 bottling (WF 80). We’re really dragging our feet far too much… Colour: white wine. Nose: barley, cane syrup, ripe apples, alcohol-free beer (yep, new descriptor just in) and a few touches of sawdust, very discreet indeed. Mouth: not bad at all, livelier than expected, apples, lemons etc., with a lovely freshness. Then herbal teas and always this rather… harmless beer. Finish: not quite as short as you might expect, malty, almost fresh. Lovely lemon in the aftertaste, which earns it an extra point without breaking sweat. Comments: this is good, I really don’t think it deserves its reputation as the runt of the Classic Malts litter. Or as merely a distillery for tourists. I find this genuinely good and very well made, quite frankly.

Vintervarme 15 yo ‘Edition #1’ (50%, Single Malt Dreams, Lowland, 1st fill oloroso barrique finish, 350 bottles, 2025)
Judging by the label, this has to be Norwegian! We love it, all great fun indeed… And a little bird who really seemed to know what he was talking about whispered in my ear that this was indeed Glenkinchie. We haven’t the slightest reason not to believe him. Colour: gold. Nose: walnut cake, gunflint, moss and ferns, then baked apples drizzled with honey. A little fresh mushroom. With water: not much change, really. Mouth (neat): rather excellent, even if the pretty dryish sherry is doing much of the heavy lifting. Walnuts and pepper, bitter orange, then more pepper, then even more pepper. We love pepper. With water: it loses a little stamina, and I’m wondering whether adding water is such a good idea. Small green apples, grass, chervil, a little cardboard. Finish: medium length, grassy and peppery, rather dry. Comments: perhaps a slightly austere whole, but this is very good, no doubt about it.
