WF's Little Duos,
today Glentauchers

Here we go…

Glentauchers 17 yo 2008/2026 (53.5%, Duncan Taylor, Octave, mizunara finish)

Glentauchers 17 yo 2008/2026 (53.5%, Duncan Taylor, Octave, mizunara finish) Three stars and a half
Mizunara is a bit like vocoders or drum machines in the 80s, we’ve seen good and less good examples. Colour: full gold. Nose: the trouble is that mizunara often works, even if our Japanese friends maintain that it is better suited to long maturation than a quick finishing. Anyway, that’s none of our business, but here we have pretty notes of fir and cedar wood, all sitting atop some lovely apple juice seasoned with cinnamon. With water: pencil shavings and grated nutmeg. Mouth (neat): very good, spicy but not excessively so, like lemon marmalade with turmeric and cinnamon. Admittedly, it’s all a little ‘culinary’, but it’s rather good cooking. With water: go easy on the water, but added sparingly, it remains lovely, with coriander seeds joining in. Finish: fairly long but now a little drying and very spicy. Comments: it’s certainly wood-driven, especially in the finish, but it still seems to work.

Glentauchers 1995/2026 ‘The Fairytale’ (57.2%, Gordon & MacPhail, Sir Kenny Dalglish’s Vintage Moments, cask #5076)

Glentauchers 1995/2026 ‘The Fairytale’ (57.2%, Gordon & MacPhail, Sir Kenny Dalglish’s Vintage Moments, cask #5076) Four stars
The youngest of the malts marking, in a manner of speaking, milestones in the career of Kenny Dalglish, that extraordinary Scottish footballer. The Longmorn 1967 in the same series, tasted a few days ago, was superb and so was the Glen Grant 1951. Colour: rich gold. Nose: it may not be totally part of their legend, but Glentauchers is certainly one of those malts that G&M did so much to champion through their semi-official/licensed bottlings. Fresh tobacco and apples, a little paraffin, a touch of vase water and plenty of farmhouse cider. All that without water… With water: grass and apple and pear peelings. Mouth: quite bitter, biting and herbaceous, water should loosen it up. With water: indeed, more expressive fruits emerge, green melon, grapefruit… Finish: medium in length. Herbs, lemon zest, unsweetened green tea. Comments: very probably the least extrovert, the most withdrawn of all these superb ‘Vintage Moments’. For the others really are magical…
