The Time Warp Sessions,
today two young Glen Grant
|
The old ‘licensed’ Glen Grants from Gordon & MacPhail are legendary, and the old official bottlings were no slouches either. In any case, today we’re going to compare one of those G&M expressions with the recent official 15-year-old, which is where we’ll begin. |

Glen Grant 15 yo (50%, OB, bourbon, +/-2026)
A recent version of the 15, I believe, with the blue-bordered label. You will also have noticed that Glen Grant has become The GlenGrant for quite some time now, in keeping with the current fashion. We have gained a The, but lost a space along the way. Colour: white wine. Nose: this is fresh, lemony, and full of green apples, rather in the style of young GGs from the 1960s indeed. We can only applaud at this stage, especially as a little chalk and a light yet lovely touch of menthol also emerge. With water: it barely changes at all and in this case, that is certainly no flaw. Mouth (neat): it is richer and thicker on the palate, more on barley, bread, pear eau-de-vie, and perhaps two drops of limoncello. More lemon again. With water: very good, and truly even more in the older Glen Grant style, sharper, more precise, slightly metallic and mineral at the same time. Finish: fairly long, always precise, rich, lemony, and on apples. The aftertaste is a little more savoury. Comments: a style that suits us down to the ground. We could easily have been back in the 1970s or 1980s.

Let’s see if that really holds true (S., that does sound a bit contrived, doesn’t it?) … |

Glen Grant 8 yo (100°proof, Gordon & MacPhail, 75.7cl, 1970s)
Colour: gold. Nose: there are very clearly similarities here, although this one carries considerably more dry sherry, walnuts, camphor, zests, and even smoke… Magnificent old amontillado nose, with bacon and all. With water: walnut wine topped up with a little seawater and coal tar. Mouth (neat): extremely beautiful, powerful, very oily, far more so than modern GGs (even that new 15), and marked by stuffed olives and old salty sherry. Or rather saline Madeira. With water: the peppers come charging in, old Comté, and even a little chilli notes that works perfectly well here. Finish: long, salty, peppery, and even more dominated by old walnuts, then bitter oranges. Comments: this was a shorter tasting note because Angus and I have already tasted a great many old young Glen Grants on WF. Do forgive me.

I’d say the surprise was the very good official 15-year-old. |
